5 Surprisingly Clean And Actually Funny Comedies Streaming Now On Netflix "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

At the end of a long day, theres nothing better than a good laugh. (Okay, there are better things, but the goal is to keep this rated PG.) Experts at the Mayo Clinic note many benefits of what they call humor therapy, including stimulating many organs, so maybe in any event laughter is good medicine.

The trouble comes in choosing a film both you and your significant other wont find repulsive or unexciting. With Hollywood producing an endless variety of crude comedies, stopping a Netflix movie youve started is more common even than having Wi-Fi issues (curse you, Comcast).

Yet as comedian and star of The Middle Patricia Heaton says in interviews: There is a way to be real and a way to do quality that people can appreciate without feeling offended. My wife and I have found, after some trial-and-error-and-restarting-and-wincing-and-choosing-another-flick, that smart, surprising comedies do still exist.

Because Netflix availability frequently changes, theres no guarantee these five films will be around long. Or you can always rent on iTunes later, if youre made of cash.

1. The Matchbreaker (2016, rated PG, 94 minutes)

In this indie comedy, an entrepreneur realizes his talent as a matchbreaker mothers hire him to randomly befriend their daughters, dish dirt, and keep their girls from choosing the wrong guy. Getting paid to be snarky: a millennial fantasy!

Produced for less than the cost of a Marvel trailer, The Matchbreaker infuses common rom-com tropes with humanity revealed in hilarity. Whyd you break up with her? a guy asks his male friend scared of commitment. Seven reasons actually, the protagonist answers in nerdy deadpan akin to The Big Bang Theory. Number one, she doesnt vote.

For those who know the backstory, the film is also bittersweet, as it co-stars the late Christina Grimmie, a singer and actress who rose to fame on The Voice and was tragically shot by a troubled fan at a June 2016 concert. Her family has said that, as a laugh-out-loud comedy, The Matchbreaker is how shed want to be remembered.

2. Turner & Hooch (1989, rated PG, 93 minutes)

Baseball bat attack by student at Australian National University A statistics lecture turned violent "IndyWatch Feed War"

A statistics lecture turned violent after a student started attacking others with a baseball bat. The lecturer and several students were seriously injured before the man was stopped.

Australian university attack

A student has been arrested after assaulting three fellow students and a lecturer in an unprovoked attack during a statistics lecture at the Australian National University in the capital Canberra.

According to the Australian Federal Police, shortly after the lecture began the man stood up in his seat armed with a baseball bat and approached the lecturer at the front of the room. Three students rushed to intervene and restrain him. He assaulted four people, including the lecturer, leaving them with serious injuries, including broken bones.

Police Detective Superintendent Ben Cartwright praised the incredible bravery on behalf of those students to protect the lecturer. During the assault, one student succeeded in taking the bat away from the attacker and running away with it, he said.

Max Claessens, an 18-year-old student whose friend was inside the classroom, said his friend told him that the attacker had waited until the class had settled in before he suddenly pulled out a baseball bat and began hurting people.

Australian university attackMax Claessens spoke with reporters

One of the students just randomly, out of the blue, got up with a bat, struck out at two or three students, before apparently going for the teacher. And obviously people were in a bit of shock so they ran out to get help before the guy who wasnt coming down and was going a bit crazy, to be honest was restrained, Claessens said.

Another student, Jolene Lavery, was walking past the room shortly after the attack. She described the situation, saying, There was a man on a stretcher who was being offered morphine, so obviously in a lot of pain, with a lot of blood coming from his head. And a lot of people in shock as well. A lot of people getting blankets put over them and being looked after by the staff and emergency services....

Sicilian Diary Skepticlawyer

From time-to-time, I indulge in a bit of travel writing, although I havent done it for a while. This weeks Speccie features yours truly travel writing on Sicily, one of my favourite places in the world and a place where I once worked on an archeological dig.

Muslims will not blow anyone up here, the proprietor of my Siracusa local assures me, we have our own people who do that. Opting to take ones annual leave in Sicily is to be confronted by a reminder of southern Italys once terrible poverty and local corruption unused and fantastically expensive elevated roadways and tunnels leading nowhere, often sprouting vegetation, litter the landscape. The Mafia appears in the form of children selling cigarettes sans health warnings, pervasive fly-tipping, and not otherwise. Sicily is remarkably safe. The winding, twisting detours Sicilys roads take are remarkable in their own way, vaulting over Luigis Lemons, Giuseppes Goats, Pietras Pears and Everyones Olives. One suspects there have been many conversations of the I-dont-like-that-highway-there/Would-you-like-me-to-move-it? sort.

Read the whole thing.

5,100+ lightning strikes an hour recorded at Northern Rivers, Australia "IndyWatch Feed World"

It was a refreshing and awesome display of lightning, thunder and rain that hit the coastal areas of the Northern Rivers last night. At the height of yesterday's storm when there was hail and the whole bit, lightningmaps.org recorded 5,100+ lightning strikes per hour. As the storm moved off the coast the numbers dropped to between 2,000-4,000 delivering a beautiful lightning display. Today will see a medium chance of showers most likely this morning and during the afternoon. Daytime temperaturs will be between 19 and 22 and winds will be southerly. For the weekend the winds will be from the south and temperatures will remind people Winter is back with overnights reaching only 6-10 degrees. On Sunday there will be a medium chance of showers in the evening.

Philippines: Marawi siege most serious terror event in Southeast Asia in past 15 years "IndyWatch Feed War"

The siege of Marawi City is the most significant terror event to have struck Southeast Asia in the past 15 years, according to an Australian expert. AP/Aaron Favila, File

MANILA, Philippines The siege of Marawi City which began in May is the most significant terrorist event in Southeast Asia in the last 15 years, according to an expert on the regions politics, highlighting the deficiency of the Philippine military and beginning what could be a long-term security threat to the Philippines and neighboring countries.

The clashes in Marawi, which prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to place Mindanao under military rule, has provided Islamist militants involved in the fighting stature among radical communities for successfully mounting the most prominent display of jihadist force of the so-called Islamic State fighters in the region, according to Greg Fealy of the Australian National University.

The battle for Marawi is the most significant terrorist event in Southeast Asia since the Bali bombings of 2002, which killed 202 people, he said, referring to the terror attack on the popular tourist island in Indonesia.

The fighting has also highlighted the weakness of the Armed Forces especially in engaging in urban combat, according Fealy. The Philippine military has been supported by American advisers as well as US and Australian intelligence operations, highlighting the assymetrical nature of the conflict, the expert said....

NZ - Fluoride in drinking water is not the answer to tooth decay "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Dr Lawrie Brent hasn't seen any evidence to convince him fluoride added to water is the answer to reducing toothe decay.Three health professionals will add their weight to a move to keep fluoride out of Waipa's drinking water.
Dentists Dr Lawrie Brett, Dr John Jukes and Te Awamutu doctor Janion Heywood will present to a public forum hosted by Fluoride Free NZ in Te Awamutu on Saturday.
Backed by medical facts, they will discuss their own observations why Waipa's drinking water shouldn't be fluoridated.
After 40 years of working in an oral practice, Brett an active advocate for fluoride-free drinking water, remains unconvinced of any benefits of intervention.
"Not only was water fluoridation not reducing tooth decay, but that it also carried general health risks," said Brett

In 2014 Local Government New Zealand urged the Government to amend the appropriate legislation so that the addition of fluoride to drinking water supplies is a decision made by the Director - General of Health rather than a council.
The Health Amendment Bill is progressing through parliament and is at the second reading stage.
Once passed it will transfer the decision making process regarding fluoridation to the district health boards.
Any thoughts of DHBs having the only say without public consultation is hard to swallow for groups opposing fluoridation.
Fluoride Free NZ spokesman Kane Titchener recently presented evidence to the Waipa District Council outlining the proposed process was "fundamentally flawed".
"There would be a 10-person board making the decisions and it would include four government appointees and six members elected from the community," he said
"Their level of understanding of fluoridation would be no greater than local councillors making the decisions.
"Council continues to ignore the call to consult with the community on the issue.
"Under DHB control, fluoridation won't be stopped and soon it will be added to areas like Waipa who have never seen it before."
Titchener is disappointed with the council.

"They failed to understand they have not given their community an opportunity learn more about fluoridation and allow consultation."
The talk will be held from 4-6 pm on Saturday, September 2 at the Community Room, Te Awamutu Library, Selwyn Lane, Te Awamutu.

Iodine, Thyroid and Low Body Temperature "IndyWatch Feed World"

The take home is that this is something you must do yourself.  Get a digital thermometer.  Check your temperature under the tongue. Add a drop of iodine to a glass of water.  Go from there as a daily practice.

One can become more rigorous, but that depends on you.  I will likely add a couple of drops to see if this cause convergence for me.  Yet a half degree is pretty modest but also meaningful and generally undesirable.  We want to close it up.

One also needs to take a supportive supplement with the higher dosage anyway and i have not hgone there yet..

Its not surprising that so many people believe the idea that global warming is being caused almost entirely by human activity, given the fact that most scientists seem to believe the same thing. But scientists should probably ask themselves why there is still such a large cohort of deniers as they like to call them, who are adamant that anthropogenic climate change is a scam.
The reason why is that the scientific community has been caught many times tampering with climate data and making outlandish claims. The celebrities and politicians who promote this cause have also been caught on many occasions, living in palatial mansions, flying across the world in private jets, and generally just living lives of excess that produce so much more carbon than the average person. Given these facts, how could anyone take the global warming arguments seriously?

Australian Govt Building Artificial Reef, as Great Barrier Reef Dies "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Great Barrier Reef off the northeastern coast of Australia is known as the worlds largest living organism, or largest structure containing living organisms. Mainstream science articles published an obituary for the reef in 2016, drawing some criticism for the fact that it isnt quite dead yet.

A March 2017 paper published in Nature claims that hundreds of miles of the reef had been bleached or died throughout 2016 alone due to high water temperatures. It seems as if there is much debate and controversy surrounding how bad the reefs condition is, and what is causing the condition.

In any case, the government of New South Wales, Australia has taken the opportunity to launch a project in Sydney to build a small artificial reef, to help native species thrive in Sydney Harbour.

According to a statement on an Australian government website:

A modular artificial reef will be suspended alongside the Sydney Opera House as part of a new research project exploring ways to improve marine biodiversity and increase native species in Sydney Harbour, Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton announced today.

The three-year research project, between the Sydney Opera House, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and the University of Sydney, will start by recording baseline data on fish numbers and diversity in underwater areas around the Opera House and in other harbour sites later this year. Once this surveying is complete the new...

Australian Senator Wear Burqa to Demonstrate a Point "IndyWatch Feed World"

Australian Senator Pauline Hanson entered the Senate in a burqa. While others immediately condemn her for anti-Muslim stunts, what about womens rights? Did that die with the Sixties? Hanson has said that these people who wear burqas should go to a country that suits their needs. Should the West change its culture to accommodate those who marry off 12 year old-girls? Where is the line? If discrimination is bad, then we should have no rules and let everyone do as they please, walk naked down the street or have sex on the public beach when crowded. Drive drunk while their at it.

I have lived in Japan as well as London. In both cases I enjoyed the culture there even though they were starkly different. That was the nice thing about living there. You do not migrate to take your culture to a place and then demand everyone adapt to you. That is just not how things work.

Where is the line drawn?

Navajo Beef Program Seeks to Expand Opportunities for Navajo Families "IndyWatch Feed 1stpeople"

Published August 25, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE  Speaker LoRenzo Bates (Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Tiis Tsoh Sikaad, TseDaaKaan, Upper Fruitland) recently met with the Blair Labatt, the president of Labatt Food Service, a food distribution company based in the state of Texas which partners with the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise and Bashas grocery stores to offer Navajo Beef to consumers in various locations in the southwest.

Navajo Beef is a brand that began in 2013 under Labatt Food Service, which strives to produce USDA Choice beef that comes from cattle that are raised in an area known as Padres Mesa Ranch, a 60,000 acre demonstration ranch in Newlands, located near Sanders. Labatt Food Service currently purchases approximately 400 cattle annually from 43 Navajo families who participate in the demonstration ranch program. In addition, families from the Eastern Navajo Agency participate in the Navajo Beef program as well.

The Padres Mesa demonstration ranch program is supported by the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian Relocation, which manages the range lands in the Newlands area by maintaining the fences and water wells for relocated families who are raising cattle.

Labatt said the program has grown since its inception to point that the company has decided to phase out a separate beef-producing program to focus more on the expansion of Navajo Beef in the southwest. According to information provide by Labatt Food Service, the program teaches Navajo ranchers the principles of herd management including vaccination care, cattle genetics, overgrazing prevention, and others.

Labatt has also met with the members of the Navajo-Hopi Land Commission to present a proposal to establish a Navajo Nation enterprise that would be delegated with the authority to manage the Padres Mesa Ranch and to expand the Navajo Beef market.

Speaker Bates stated that while the concept of growing cattle herds and providing economic opportunities for Navajo ranching families is positive, there would be many complex issues that would have to be addressed if the Nation is to assume the duties of supporting the program.

The cattle market is very complex and constantly changing and when you tie that in with this proposal to change management of the program, it becomes very challenging and raises a lot of questions that need to be answered, added Speake...

New: The Affordable Housing Party gets the population connection "IndyWatch Feed World"

"The Affordable Housing Party: the single issue party dedicated to solving Australia's housing affordability crisis. Australians are now living with some of the most unaffordable housing in the world, but it doesn't have to be this way! Obscene tax incentives to invest in property. Our lawmakers profit from the status quo. We opened up our housing market to investors all over the world. Australia's rapid population growth. Home buyers are paying too much to try to compete with investors. This can't go on forever!" Former journalist, Andrew Potts, Sydney, registered the Affordable Housing Party (AHP) with the Australian Electoral Commission earlier this month. Policies include: Phasing out negative gearing and capital gains discount on investment property sales; Stopping overseas buyers from buying Australian properties; Taxing properties left empty by investors; Cutting down immigration to 70,000 annually; Banning full time Airbnb properties; Ending no fault evictions for rental properties. Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/AffordableHousingParty/

Australians are now living with some of the most unaffordable housing in the world, but it doesn't have to be this way!

In 1986 in the Inner West Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill you could buy a newly renovated three bedroom home with a big backyard for $150,000 and pay off the mortgage in under a decade

In 2017 to buy the same home would cost you $1.5 million and you will probably be paying off that mortgage for the rest of your life.

Wages in Australia didn't increase by 1000% in the three decades since 1986. So what happened to make Australia have some of the least affordable housing on the planet?

Fed Court decision: Adani leases issued despite Traditional Owners express rejection "IndyWatch Feed 1stpeople.pacific"

The Queensland State continues to authorise dispossession

Responding to a Federal Court decision today, in one of the long running cases bought by Traditional Owners against the Adani mine, the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners expressed their profound frustration with the way the native title and court processes have over-ridden their decision to reject an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) with Adani.

The appeal against the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT), which authorised the issuing of mining leases to Adani by the Queensland Government, was dismissed. The Wangan and Jagalingou (W&J) Representative Council are seeking the advice of their senior counsel as to whether to pursue the matter in the High Court.

In May 2015, Adrian Burragubba, on behalf of W&J Representative Council, sought to uphold the decision of the W&J people in October 2014 to reject an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with Adani, the second time since 2012.

Senior spokesperson for the W&J Traditional Owners Council, Adrian Burragubba, says, We have fought and will continue to fight for our right to say no to the destruction of our country through mining and to have our rights properly recognised and respected by the State Government.

We are proud of our efforts to hold Adani and the Queensland Government to account through the Courts. The Courts are the place we have to pursue justice for our people and we will exhaust all legal avenues in pursuit of our right to self-determination and our right to give or withhold consent.

Todays decision hangs on the technical limits of judicial review of the issuing of leases for the Carmichael mine, and not the embodiment of our rights. We will redouble our commitment to uphold the original decisions of our people which are to oppose this mine of mass destruction.

We now look to our trial in March 2018 which focuses on Adanis fake ILUA. We have three times voted No to Adanis grubby deal.

Despite the entirely valid rejection of an ILUA by the W&J claim group in October 2014, Adani persisted. First by seeking a ruling from the NNTT to ignore our native title rights. Adani has actively worked to split our group. The ugliest display by Adani was to bankroll a sham meeting that they hold up as authorising an ILUA.

Youth spokesperson for the W&J Traditional Owners Council, Murrawah Johnson, says, Adan...

Feeding Your Plants Sustainable Gardening Australia

Gardening is a bit like life really the more you know, the more you know you dont know. It can be so full of hits and misses, trials and errors, successes and failures When it comes to how to help your plants grow there are so many possibilities should I use compost, manures, worm castings, weed teas or commercial fertilisers and are solids better than liquids? Some gardeners swear by one or the other, but all possibly have their place at various times, so lets look at them all.

It is this ever-evolving and seemingly endless supply of information that can make gardening a hobby that seems daunting and overwhelming to the newbies and brown thumbs amongst us. Fear of asking stupid questions at garden centres or of our gardener friends can prevent us seeking out the information we need. And so many of us experience a string of failures in the patch before we have many successes. Some of the most commonly asked queries involve fertilising essentially the who, what, where, when and why of feeding our flora.

Why do Plants Need a Feed?

All living organisms need food in order to remain healthy and happy. Plants are no exception.  So generally speaking, over many thousands of years, plants evolved and adapted to the environments within which they were rooted.  If they were stuck in impoverished soils, then the plants that survived were those that made do with less.   Conversely, plants that grew in moist, loamy, nutrient rich soils (think Tasmania) gobbled up as many nutrients as they could, and now, when grown away from their natural environments, can need some serious feed!  And, unless the plant is growing in its natural environment, and all plant waste products (fallen leaves, dead branches etc) are being returned to the soil, they are essentially removing nutrients from the soil without replacing them. So thats where we come in, especially if we are attempting to grow hungry plants, like annuals and edibles.

So, where do we start? First, we need to understand the differences between fertilisers, soil amendments, soil conditioners, manures, mulches, compost or liquids. Fertilisers can be defined as substances containing nutrients essential for plant growth, and are generally available as either organic or inorganic (more on that shortly) and as either a solid or liquid.

Strictly speaking, soil conditioners are soil amendments that are added to soil to keep the soil itself in good shape, which in turn benefits our plants. They may or may not c...

Tom Montalk: Opening the Flow "IndyWatch Feed World"

Source: Montalk.net | by Tom Montalk

Have you ever been under distressing financial circumstances, expecting to fall into an abyss of poverty with the next emergency expense? How many times have you suffered the worst of your expectations? How many times did help come from unexpected places to get you through despite the worst of odds?

Our expectations come from what we have been programmed to expect. What actually happens depends on the laws of reality deciding the nature of our experiences. Those who pay attention will see that what actually happens is most often at odds with what is expected. Why do our plans and anticipations about the future rarely happen the way we envision them? Why are our programmed expectations so different from our actual experiences?

The answer is that many of these expectations are control mechanisms grafted onto us by the Matrix Control System. From birth we are indoctrinated through school, social programming, media and culture to believe in a backward system of limitations and motivations that have nothing to do with our true potential or reason for being here. We are taught what is taboo and what is respectable, what is possible and what is not, what goals to shoot for and what path to follow to achieve those goals. This indoctrination is so complete that most of us accept its precepts as common sense and tend to fight or disbelieve any suggestions that reality could be to the contrary, even if these suggestions come from our own life experiences.

Often we don't have the guts to push the envelope but are nonetheless thrust into these forbidden territories through seemingly unfortunate circumstances: financial disasters, emergencies, ultimatums, and unavoidable risks. And just when failure seems certain, the unexpected happens: money comes from an unexpected source, a needed opportunity arrives just in the nick of time, everything amazingly falls into place.

Most people encountering these last minute miracles pass them off as freak exceptions to the rule, nothing that can be relied upon as a common occurrence. But what these people do...

Chet Raymo, The Seat of the Soul "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Seat of the Soul
by Chet Raymo

"It was not my first visit. I had been there once before to talk with the great man, to the Castle of Cloux, near Amboise, in the valley of the Loire. He had been living there since 1516, at the invitation of Francis I, king of France. He was 67 years old, bundled up in a thick fur wrap by a roaring fire. His face showed age but not infirmity. Long white hair fell about his shoulders. White beard. Thick, downswept brows shaded his eyes like awnings. A strong nose. And of course the mouth, serious yet generous, not unlike the mouth of the Christ he had painted on the wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.

The king likes to surround himself with luminaries - artists, poets, philosophers, talented people of all sorts. Leonardo's reputation, of course, is known throughout Europe. It was inevitable that the king would draw him to France. A prize of war? So be it.

The last time I visited we talked about his paintings, only three of which had followed him to France. This time I wanted to hear about his anatomical studies. I had heard he had hundreds of drawings, recording the meticulous dissection of cadavers. "Might I see them?" I asked. Kindly, he aquiesced, and asked his young apprentice and friend, Count Francesco Melzi, to fetch several thick portfolios. As I carefully turned the sheets, I was stunned. Never had I seen such detailed representations of the human frame. Bones, muscles, tissues. Heart, lungs, stomach, liver. "From life?" I asked, forgetting myself. "From death," he replied with a slight smile. "Not so may years ago I had the privilege of working with Marcantonio della Torre, professor of anatomy at the University of Pavia. He gave me access to corpses."

As the thickly-annotated sheets slipped through my fingers I realized I was looking at something marvelous, a marriage of art and science.

Bin Stains Global Hobo

I hold my breath and open the green bin lid. The plastic handle is cold and sticky and this is the last thing I feel like doing after work. The inside smells rotten, even though its empty. Well, not entirely empty. Stray maggots linger along the rim and wriggle down the inner walls: hundreds of them, off-white and juvenile, somehow squirming without moving. Their presence doesnt make much sense. Maggots only eat meat and I havent had any meat in the house in weeks I guess they are shit at being vegetarians too.

I walk up the driveway, around the back and into the shed. I fetch the hose, which is wound up in one of those plastic reels with a rotating handle, and carry it to the tap in the front yard. I attach the orange hose-end to the tap nozzle with a click and pull the hose down the driveway.

I find maggots gross. Theres something dirty and evil about them, even though they arent much different to worms or snails. Snails are cute, maggots are infesting. Id rather a thousand beetles than a thousand cockroaches. Someone once told me that in New Zealand possums are a pest.

As I near the bin, the angle of the hose pulls strangely and it tips the reel over. I try pulling the hose further and the reel slides against the concrete for about a metre and then jams. I walk back up the driveway, turn the reel upright and then down towards the bin, but as soon as I pull the hose the plastic reel awkwardly spins around and falls over, breaching like a stubborn foetus.

On the third attempt, I start questioning why the fuck I am cleaning out my bin. Its one of those acts of civility that are so redundant they are almost insane. An image of a 60s Valium Mum with a cloth, scrubbing her way through her marble bench-top, with short, shallow circles, to the centre of the earth, comes to mind. Repetitive, worthless, cleanliness.

The bin will just fill up with rubbish and become dirty again. But I cant let it go; those maggots are so gross, so full of symbolism. If the bin were full of frogs, Id probably never put rubbish in it again. Id drag that bin up the two flights of stairs into my tiny apartment, lift it onto the kitchen table, cut a rectangle in its side (which Id wrap in cling film with holes stabbed in for air) and watch those little frogs ribbit around for hours.

But they are not frogs; they are maggots, and it is a big smelly bin. It is dirty and needs to be cleaned so that it can be dirty again. Like making a bed. Except beds are much more vital. You sleep in beds. Therefore, their condition is endlessly important.

You know, I recently started making my bed. Years ago, I would have told you that making beds...

CAPE TOWN - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane could soon face questions from MPs over her decision to grant Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe immunity, but theres no date for the meeting yet.

Mugabe was allowed to leave the country despite being investigated for the assault of a South African woman at a Sandton hotel this month.

The debacle has sparked an uproar, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) calling for a parliamentary inquiry into governments failure to ensure Mugabe faces prosecution.

The portfolio committee responsible for oversight of Nkoana-Mashabanes department has agreed to call the minister to explain her actions.

The issue was also raised during Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosas question and answer session in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Ramaphosa was put on the spot when Inkatha Freedom Party parliamentarian Liezl van der Merwe asked him whether he supported the decision to grant Mugabe immunity.

And I think as a leader of government business you must provide us with some answers.

The deputy president was heckled by MPs in the opposition benches as he responded.

The clarity that there is on this matter is not full and complete. In the sense that yes in certain environments its applied, in others, its not. So, it happens to have been applied here.

Twenty-year-old Gabriella Engels claims Mugabe attacked her with an electrical extension cord.

Mugabe allegedly stormed the hotel room her sons had been staying in and allegedly attacked Engels who was there that night.

CAPE TOWN - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has been put on the spot in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon over government's decision to grant Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

Ramaphosa was answering questions from Members of Parliament (MPs) about gender violence in the National Assembly when he was asked about the Mugabe debacle.

The first lady was allowed to leave the country while she was being investigated for the alleged assault of a South African woman in Johannesburg this month.

Inkatha Freedom Party MP Liezl van der Merwe asked Ramaphosa whether he supported the International Relations Ministers decision to grant Mugabe immunity.

I would like to know from you Honourable Deputy President, what type of government would stand on the side of an alleged abuser?

Ramaphosa struggled to defend governments position.

Its the first time we have utilised this type of convention and a lot can be said on pro and against it. And in the end, there needs to be the clarity that there is on this matter is not full and complete.

The dual citizenship debacle that has engulfed Australian politics will be back before the High Court in Canberra for a hearing in October.

Four senators and deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce were referred to the court earlier this month after it was revealed they did not meet the sole citizenship requirement of section 44 of the constitution.

South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon and NSW Senator Fiona Nash will also be referred to the court over their British citizenship by descent when federal parliament next sits in September.

At a directions hearing held in Brisbane on Thursday, Chief Justice Susan Kiefel set the matter down for a three-day hearing in Canberra from October 10.

One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts remains the most at risk of being disqualified from parliament as he may have officially renounced his British citizenship after his nomination, the court heard.

Solicitor-General Stephen Donaghue QC said there was a clear demarcation line between the politicians those who had known they were a citizen of a foreign power and those who did not.

Under section 44 of the constitution a person is incapable of being elected to the parliament if they are a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power.

Mr Joyce has been found to have been a New Zealand citizen by descent but the government has advice this isnt enough to unseat him.

If the court finds him to be ineligible, it will trigger a by-election in his NSW seat of New England, and potentially put at risk the governments one-seat majority in the lower house.

The court will also examine stood-aside cabinet minister Matt Canavan, who has Italian heritage on his mothers side.

Like Senator Roberts, former Greens senators Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam were also born overseas.

Pyne slams red herring marriage claims National News Echonetdaily

The postal vote for gay marriage will take place in mid-September. file pic)

A senior Liberal has warned opponents of gay marriage to stop making red herring arguments against change as enrolments for the postal vote closed.

Enrolments closed at midnight on Thursday with both sides of the debate from politicians to celebrities making a last ditch plea for people to get involved.

Survey papers are expected to start hitting mailboxes in mid-September.

Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne hit out at no campaigners who claim the survey is about freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

He said the only question was whether two members of the same sex could marry and any questions about protections for religious freedom would be dealt with by legislation if a majority of Australians voted in support of marriage equality.

It is a complete red herring, he told ABC TV.

So, lets keep it simple and try to not muddy the waters, as some people do, which is quite frankly a campaigning tactic.

It followed warnings by the Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart that future gay marriage laws could infringe rights of freedom of religion and conscience.

It could result in restrictions on the right of ministers of religion and religious bodies and organisations having the freedom to teach, preach and speak about marriage between persons of the same sex being contrary to their religious or conscientious beliefs, he wrote in an open letter.

Archbishop Hart urged Catholics to vote against change for the health and future of society.

But he insisted the debate needed to be respectful, with both sides expressing their ideas with conviction instead of creating a campaign of hate.

Mr Pyne said any colleagues who insisted on opposing gay marriage in parliament despite a yes vote would have to explain themselves to their electorates.

I certainly wouldnt be thumbing my nose at the will of the Australian people, he said.

MPs caution against burqa ban despite poll National News Echonetdaily

Australian MPs are against banning the burqa. (pic supplied)

Senior MPs from both sides have cautioned against a push to ban the burqa despite a poll showing half of Australians would support the move.

A Sky News/ReachTEL found 44 per cent of people strongly supported banning the burqa in public places, while a further 13 per cent supported it.

Of the more than 2800 people surveyed, 19 per cent strongly opposed a ban, 12 per cent opposed, while the rest were undecided.

Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne said his concern about the burqa was that it isolated women from society.

I think that is a dangerous thing, he told Nine Network on Friday.

Its nothing to do with it being Muslim or any other kind of religion for that matter.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese conceded to being uncomfortable when the burqa was worn in public.

I think people who arent from that culture are uncomfortable with it, he said.

But he also warned bans doesnt work.

Theres a whole range of behaviour from people that have different cultures, different ethnicities, different religions that people might not be comfortable with. But that doesnt mean you go about banning it.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who wore a burqa into the Senate last week, seized on the poll.

Perhaps while the government are conducting their plebiscite on same sex marriage, we include the question as to whether Australians want to ban all full face coverings in government buildings and public spaces, she told News Corp.

Revenge porn is now a crime in NSW, with offenders facing up to three years behind bars.

The state government announced the start of the new laws on Friday, which make it an offence to intentionally record or distribute an intimate image of a person without their consent.

Offenders who do so not only face jail time, but also risk an $11,000 fine.

The laws also make it an offence to threaten to distribute intimate images, to protect victims against controlling behaviour in abusive relationships.

The new laws shift the power away from vengeful ex-partners and manipulative predators and help victims regain privacy and dignity, Attorney General Mark Speakman said in a statement.

An offender who fails to take down material could face an extra two years in jail and a $5500 fine.

Abstract:  AIM: To compare stress resistance increasing and analgesic activities of piperlongumine and a methanolic Piper longum fruit extract (PLE).METHODS: Efficacies of a single and repeated daily oral doses (1-256 mg/kg/day) of PLE, piperlongumine, and 50 mg/kg/day doxycycline against foot shock stress triggered alteration in body weights and core temperatures, and of their 11 daily doses on antidepressants like activity in tail suspension test and on pentobarbital induced sedation in male mice were compared. In another experiment, analgesic activities of single and repeated daily 5 mg/kg oral doses of piperlongumine and PLE in mice hot plate test and in acetic acid induced writing tests were compared with those of aspirin and doxycycline.RESULTS: After their single oral doses no effects of piperlongumine or PLE or doxycycline were observed in the footshock stress induced hyperthermia test or in hot plate test. However, significant effects of piperlongumine and PLE in both the tests were observed after their 5 or more daily doses. Both of them also dose dependently suppressed daily handling and repetitive testing triggered alterations in body weights and core temperatures. Their doxycycline like antidepressant activity in tail suspension test and aspirin like analgesic effects in acetic acid writhing test were observed after their 11 daily 5 mg/kg oral dose.CONCLUSION: Piperlongumine is another bioactive secondary metabolite of P. longum and other plants of piper species with stress response suppressing, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Its bactericidal activities can also contribute to its therapeutically interesting bio-activity profile.

When the Police Knock on Your Door Your Rights & Options: A Legal Guide & Poster "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The post When the Police Knock on Your Door Your Rights & Options: A Legal Guide & Poster appeared first on It's Going Down.

In cooperation with legal counsel, our comrades have prepared a poster explaining how to handle visits from law enforcement. This includes any agent from any law enforcement agency, regardless of whether they are local, state, or federal, including the FBI, ATF, and ICE when they are working as law enforcement, uniformed or not. Consider putting a copy of this poster by the doors of your residence and familiarizing yourself with the information. These days, no matter who you are or what youre doing, you never know when you might receive an unwelcome visit.

Low pay and unemployment benefits not enough for even frugal existence The Pen

Contributed by Ben Wilson

A study funded by the Australian Research Council, Catholic Social Services Australia and, United Voice and the Australian Council of Social Service, has come along with a better way to determine the level of income necessary to ensure everyone, a fully healthy life.

The study, carried out by Professor Peter Saunders and Megan Bedford of the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of NSW, has just been launched and it contains budget standards for unemployed and low paid Australians, based on a basket of goods and services for different sized families at these income levels, without allowance for modest luxuries and wastage kept at a minimum. Only what is required for basic needs is considered.

The unemployed are not even considered as needing to own a car.

To achieve this level of income, a single adult would need to spend $600 a week. A couple with no children would need $830. Add a child of six and that rises to $970. Add a second child, of 10, and its up to $1170. A sole parent working part-time, with a child, would need to spend $830 a week.

Lets take a couple with two children. Their biggest expense would be rent, $460 a week for a three-bedroom unit in an outer suburb. Then $200 for food, $140 for transport, $140 for household goods and services, $80 for recreation (swimming lessons; bit of sport for the kids), $60 for education, $40 for personal care, $30 for clothing and footwear and $20 a week for out-of-pocket healthcare.

The budget standards for unemployed families are, perforce, a lot tighter.

Whereas the low-paid were assumed to shop at Woolworths and Kmart, unemployed people in the focus groups used to check the realism of the standards said they couldnt afford such stores and went to Aldi and discount stores. They chase specials and collect discount vouchers, make things last longer and waste nothing.

Even with this frugality, an unemployed single adult needs $430 a week. A couple without children needs $660, but that rises by $110 to $770 with one child, then by a further $170 to $940 with a second child. An unemployed sole parent with one child needs $680 a week.

According to the study, those on Newstart receive an income that is nowhere near the measure. This can be extended to those on other Centrelink benefits.

Singles who have jobs, but are on minimum wages, barely scrape past the miserly minimum living standard. Those with families fall below.

This study shows that a lot of Australians are not doing too well at present and his contradicts the notion of a fair go nation.

It also answers the claim made too often by politicians and the plainly ignorant that the unemployed are living the good life, at the expense of everyone else.

The research carried out at the Social Policy Research Centre, contributes to a better understanding of what it i...

Usually when he comes for a visit, he stops by the front door first and gives one or two polite barks. If no one answers the front door, he will either try to go through the garage or go around through the backyard." "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Tommys family adopted him from a shelter when he was around a year old. Initially, the family had been looking for a girl dog and had set up meetings with a few potential matches. While they waited for those dogs to arrive from their foster homes, one of the staff members asked if the family would like to meet Tommy in the meantime. It was love at first sight for both the family and for Tommy.

When it came time for him to go back out, he laid down on the floor trying his best not to leave us; she had to literally drag/slide him on his belly out of the room, Jenna Termolen, Tommys mom, told The Dodo. He had chosen his new family and was not willing to give us up. After meeting the other dogs, the boys all decided that he was the one.

Credit: Jenna Termolen

For most of his life, Tommy lived with his family in Illinois, until 2015, when they moved to a neighborhood in upstate New York. Tommy had a lot of dog friends back in his old neighborhood, and seemed to be missing them after the move until he met Jackson.

About a week after the family moved into their new home, Termolen was out running errands when she got a text from her youngest son saying that a very large, very shaggy dog with no tail had suddenly appeared inside their house.

I immediately called him to see if everything was OK, Termolen said. He relayed that Tommy and the dog were getting along just fine; the dog seemed friendly, and Tommy was taking him on a tour of the house.

Credit: Jenna Termolen

After finally locating the dogs collar under all his fur, they discovered that his name was Jackson, and he lived right down the street. Termolen and her son walked Jackson home, and while his family was embarrassed that he had somehow found his way into someones home, they were not at all surprised that he was out and about trying to make friends. Termolen and her son said goodbye to Jackson and headed home and soon realized that Jacksons visit that day had certainly not been his last.

Now, Jackson comes over to visit Tommy almost every day. The first few times, Termolen and her family walked Jackson back home, but have since realized that he totally knows the way on his own. If the familys garage door is open, then Jackson just lets himself into the house, and no one in the family is ever surprised to see him anymore. ...

Piperlongumine inhibits TGF--induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition "IndyWatch Feed Health"

PMID:  Eur J Pharmacol. 2017 Jul 19. Epub 2017 Jul 19. PMID: 28734931 Abstract Title:  Piperlongumine inhibits TGF--induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition by modulating the expression of E-cadherin, Snail1, and Twist1. Abstract:  Cancer is a life-threatening disease, and the occurrence of metastasis, which increases the lethality of primary tumors, is increasing. The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a biological process by which epithelial cells lose cell-cell adhesion properties and acquire mesenchymal properties, including motility and invasiveness. EMT is considered an early stage of metastasis; therefore, inhibiting EMT may be an effective anticancer therapy. In the present study, the antimetastatic effect of piperlongumine (PL) was assessed in human cancer cells. PL is a single component isolated from long pepper (Piper longum) and it has been studied for its antibacterial, antiangiogenic, and antidiabetic activities. Migration assays (wound healing assay) and transwell invasion assays showed that PL inhibited the migration and invasion of cancer cells. Western blotting and immunofluorescence imaging showed that TGF- upregulated the transcription factors Snail1 and Twist1 and downregulated E-cadherin, a marker of epithelial cells, inducing EMT. PL might inhibit TGF--induced EMT by downregulating Snail1 and Twist1 and upregulating E-cadherin in cancer cells. In summary, PL might inhibit TGF--induced EMT, suggesting that it is a promising anticancer agent.

Germany will not automatically side with US in war with N. Korea "IndyWatch Feed World"

Berlin will not automatically side with the US should it face an armed conflict with North Korea, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said.

Merkel believes the North Korean crisis cannot be resolved through military means

The German chancellor was speaking at the Deutschland Live event organized by national newspaper Handelsblatt, where the ongoing North Korean crisis was among the key topics addressed.

When asked about the worst-case scenario, namely an armed conflict between Washington and Pyongyang, Merkel said that Germany would not necessarily back America.

READ MORE: US nuclear arms should be removed from Germany chancellor candidate

No, not automatically. I do not see any military solution to [the crisis with] North Korea. I think it is wrong, Merkel said.

The German leader called for a peaceful resolution to tensions, insisting that diplomatic means have not been utilized in full.

Merkel has rejected any military option for North Korea, while Washington and Pyongyang continue to be embroiled in a war of words. At the height of recent tensions, US President Donald Trump promised to meet any further threats from North Korea with fire and fury, while the North threatened to strike a US base in Guam.

Germany will be intensively involved in any non-military solutions, Merkel said. But an escalation of rhetoric is the wrong answer.

In light of Merkels comments, RT looks back at other points of contention between the US and European nations.

Meanwhile, Berlin has also voiced support for the Russian-Chinese initiative for a double freeze to resolve the Korean crisis. The plan involves simultaneously stopping missile tests by North Korea and halting South Korean drills with the US.

Washington rebuffed the calls, however, and is currently holding the large-scale Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises on the Korean Peninsula with Seoul. Despite the US saying that the drills are designed to enhance readiness and protect the region, Pyongyang sees them as a dir...

Central Bank of Papua New Guinea Adopts Blockchain Technology "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Central Bank of Papua New Guinea Adopts Blockchain Technology

The number of countries with banks experimenting with blockchain technology is growing rapidly. The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG), north of Australia, has joined the movement with its own central Bank of Papua New Guinea running blockchain trials.

Central Bank Governor Loi Bakani, known as a champion of new technologies as a way to enable financial inclusion, recently hosted a conference to showcase his countrys commitment to blockchain technology, with participants from at home and around the world, including Abt Associates, Paycase, Othera, IDbox, Pacific Markets, UCash, Seso and ADCCA.

At the conference, Bakani described the blockchain trials underway at the Bank of PNG and introduced the PNG Digital Commerce and Cryptocurrency Association for the growing number of Papua New Guinea tech entrepreneurs and businesses interested in blockchain technology.

Bakani said, This will allow PNG to join the Global Blockchain Forum, which gets PNG a cutting edge in discussions about Blockchain at a global level, along with Australia, Canada, U.S.A., Dubai, UK and Japan. There is no reason why PNG cant be a leader for emerging markets.

There are already central banks experimenting with blockchain technology around the world, including Bank of America, HSBC, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Bank of England, People's Bank of China, Bank of Canada, the National Bank of Cambodia, and the Central Bank of India.

Elizabeth Genia, Assistant Governor of the central Bank of PNG said, It is the new innovations that can change peoples lives almost 85 percent of our people live outside the banking system.

According to Abt Associates Jane Thomason, who helped manage the conference, 85 percent of PNG has little or no access to banking services and accounts, and the island is among the most expensive remittance corridors in the world, with nearly 10 percent of all funds transferred going to fees alone.

Thomason told the conference that blockchain-based technologi...

We- as the FIRST family- and blood- actually had PRESIDENT over my fathers money. In fact- we could STILL make issue out of it and probably still win- because legally- we were ENTITLED, since our father DID NOT legally disown us. So it NEVER HAS BEEN about money- it has been about justice. If it HAD just been about money- we could have had it MUCH EASIER than what I have had to go through reporting my father and his third families murderous activities.

A new major renewable energy project, headed up by Solar Reserve, is expected to generate power for 90,000 homes across South Australia. The Aurora Solar Energy Project, located 30km north of Port Augusta, will harness solar energy and store it using molten salt thermal storage. This important initiative in the history of Australia will require no fossil fuels and produce zero carbon emissions.

The State, last episode. "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

This blog has kindly given itself permission to address matters other than BBC bias, although (arguably) much of our grumbles can be traced back to the BBC.
So, unapologetically, this is another post about The State. Yes, it was shown on Channel 4. If youre looking for BBC-only content, you need to take a right at the crossroads and straight on - you cant miss it.

There has been quite a lot of coverage of Peter Kosmisnkys four part series about British would-be jihadis and jihadi brides.  Opinion is divided, but one particular complaint was unanimous. Most critics thought that the drama needed a back story. What, they wanted to know, led these particular characters to radicalisation?
If youre looking for answers, Peter Kosminsky isnt going to be providing them.

Kosminsky has been telling the media that he and his team spent eighteen months trawling through reams of testimony and guidance from witnesses and experts on Islam.
(Otherwise how could a 61 year old middle-class Bafta-winning film-maker justify making a ground-breaking film about the subject?)

Im sure he believes he knows enough - at least enough to take a selection of interesting anecdotes and string them together into a gritty award-winning work.

As human beings were all capable of holding dozens of contradictory beliefs and opinions at once. Cognitive dissonance, isnt it?

Here, the script delivered, and we were expected to swallow, leading characters so full of cognitive dissonance that the finished product came across as a string of anecdotes cobbled together - thatll do - and very heavy reliance on the acting and Kosminskys cinematographic expertise to see it through.

One example of what seemed to be an isolated  interesting factoid thrown in for the sake of it, was protagonist Jalal being advised to speak Arabic, not English, because the particularly volatile knife-wielding psychopath and beheader-in-chief had a thing about Brits. I can almost hear Kosminskys team saying Thats interesting, well use that one.

Asteroid Florence Will Fly By Earth September 1 "IndyWatch Feed World"

asteroid

The largest object to skim past our planet since NASA began recording such events, will fly by on September 1. Asteroid Florence measuring 2.7 miles across will safely pass by 4.4 million miles.

In no way should this be alarming and it isnt an apocalyptic event by any means. But it does show just how irrelevant Earth and its inhabitants are in the grand scheme of the infinitely massive universe. If nothing else, it should put things into perspective.

Named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, the asteroid will be the biggest to pass by earth this closely since NASA started tracking these types of near-Earth asteroids, an agency official said. While many known asteroids have passed by closer to Earth than Florence will on September 1, all of those were estimated to be smaller, Paul Chodas, manager of NASAs Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at the agencys Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement.

Astronomer Schelte Bobby Bus first spotted asteroid Florence in 1981 at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. The flyby on September 1st is the asteroids closest approach since 1890 and it wont get this close to Earth again until after 2500, according to the statement.

As asteroid Florence passes by Earth, astronomers will take the opportunity to capture radar images to learn more about the asteroids exact size and detailed surface features. Amateur astronomers will be able to view the asteroid using small telescopes as early as late August, when Florence begins to brighten in the night sky and streaks through the constellations Piscis Austrinus, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Delphinus....

Veteran confronts Ohio Police Chief & Mayor after cops killed unarmed man (VIDEO) "IndyWatch Feed World"

Tensions among police and citizens in Euclid, Ohio have come to a head recently after police killed an unarmed 23-year-old man for unknown reasons and officers were seen on video pulverizing another man over a suspended license. A video uploaded to Facebook captured an articulate rant by a military veteran about these recent events, directed at the police chief and mayor, which epitomized these tensions perfectly. In March of this year, a Euclid police officer, responding to a call about a man sitting in his vehicle, shot and killed 23-year-old Luke Stewart. The police department and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation have yet to give any reason for the shooting, and an investigation would later reveal Stewart was unarmed. Naturally, the citizens of Euclid are upset and want answers. The family and citizens demanding answers as to why these recent events unfolded like they did came to a head this week as dozens of people took over a Euclid City Council meeting.

Another Revealing Interview With Robert Kennedy Jr. On Vaccines "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

ROBERT-759x420Watch New and Very Informative Documentary: The Truth About Vaccines

A recent interview was conducted by STAT News reporter Helen Branswell with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from The World Mercury Project, an organization whose mission is to raise public awareness of the dangers and sources of mercury, with the ultimate goal of banning all uses of mercury on a global level. They believe the public desperately needs  accurate information about the sources and dangers of mercury, as this will allow them to better protect themselves and their families from the potentially devastating effects of this potent neurotoxin.

They emphasize:

The average person does not know that mercury is the second most toxic element on the planet, nor do they know that it is an incredibly potent toxin even at small exposure levels. Once in the body, mercury has a high affinity for moving into the brain where it can become trapped for decades. Once in the brain, mercury causes a chronic inflammatory process in the tissue which has been connected to autism, Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease) and many more adverse health consequences.

When it comes to vaccines in particular, contrary to popular belief, many vaccines still contain unsafe levels of mercury. The flu and tetanus vaccine, for example, still contains 25 mcg of mercury. Mercury has also seeped into the food chain and hundreds of other medical pharmaceutical products, along with dental fillings.

None of these preservatives have ever been proven safe by science, so what is going on here? Why do we continue to allow this to happen?

This is precisely why Kennedy, along with several other supporters, held a press conference offering $100,000 USD to any scientist or journalist who could provide evidence showing it is safe to inject mercury into babies. While doing so, he presented approximately 100 studies that proved it is unsafe to do so.

Despite their long use as active agents of medicines and fungicides, the safety levels of these substances have never been determined, either for animals...

THERE ARE SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITHIN SAA LEADERSHIP
Scopa chairperson Themba Godi says there are serious problems within SAAs leadership, but cannot say if the departure of Dudu Myeni would improve the situation.

Masego Rahlaga

JOHANNESBURG - Parliaments Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) chairperson Themba Godi says there are serious problems within South African Airways (SAA)s leadership, but cannot say if the departure of the airlines board chair Dudu Myeni would improve the situation.

Scopa on Wednesday interrogated the irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure racked up by the airline during the past financial year.

During a question and answer session with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa in Parliament, claims emerged that government plans to sell off its stake in Telkom to raise an R10 billion bailout for SAA.

Godi says finances at SAA need to be sorted out.

From our discussions on Wednesday, its clear that there are a number of problem areas, but of course leadership is one of the critical issues, whether from the board or management, I think there are serious challenges that need to be corrected.

Meanwhile, transport economist Joachim Vermooten says the problems at SAA are caused by the carrier wanting to do too much while it cannot afford to.

At the moment, it has a broad mandate and I think its just too wide. And its expanded on its activities instead of contracting that. So, you really need to make a change in direction to actually reduce the last lay-offs."

'PLAN TO SELL TELKOM SHARES TO RAISE R10BN TO BAIL OUT SAA JUST AN OPTION'

Eye Witness News

PARLIAMENT - The Ministry of Finance says the plan to sell off governments stake in Telkom to raise an R10 billion bailout for ailing national airline South African Airways (SAA) is just one option being considered.

Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentarian Alf Lees stunned MPs when he told Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday that he had a Cabinet document containing Finance Minister Malusi Gigabas detailed proposal for the move.

Ramaphosa, who was answering MPs questions in Parliament, neither confirmed nor denied the plan, saying that governments strategic assets remained under review.

Eyewitness News has had sight of the document which includes a draft bill for the appropriation of the R10 billion.

Lees questioned whether it was a good idea.

Honourable Deputy President, do you support a sale of a good asset to save a bad asset?

The Economic Freedom Fighters also challenged the move.

The document values governments nearly 40% shareholding in Telkom at more than R14 billion and notes it will cost the fiscus R800m in annual dividends.

Lees revelation came just hours after Deputy Finance Minister Sfiso Buthelezi told Parliaments Standing Committee on Public Accounts that SAA would not be allowed to go under and would not be privatised.

Finance ministry spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete has confirmed the document is a Cabinet memorandum.

But he says it is one option among others that the government is considering assisting the cash-strapped SAA and that nothing has yet been finalised.

Dont Feed The Trolls How To Combat The Alt-Right "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By Kazu Haga for Waging Nonviolence - Nazism and white supremacy are forms of violence. Lets start there. The constitution does not protect violence, and Im happy to see that the California chapter of the ACLU has taken a stand against protecting the free speech of hate groups. But with or without marching permits, it is clear that public displays of hatred are a growing trend in the United States. And as much as I dont want to give these groups more attention, it is also clear that simply ignoring them is not going to make them go away. So what do we do? Many communities seem to have embraced the militant tactics of Antifa, so much so that it seems like its already an expectation that every alt-right rally will turn into a violent battlefield. Yet I cant help but wonder if these tactics are giving the alt-right exactly what they want. Is it possible that we could be winning small battles while losing the war? Is it possible that as we celebrate Nazis getting punched, their numbers are growing as a direct result of it? I dont pretend to have all the answers. I would even admit that a portion of the blame for the rise in violence has to go to those of us committed to nonviolence for our failure to come up with the type of assertive response necessary in these urgent times.

Harvard-Trained Brain Researcher Has a Stroke and Figures Out The Mystery of Life "IndyWatch Feed World"

This Harvard-trained brain researcher had a stroke and while she lost half of her brain she survived and came back with some amazing information. Learning from an experience like this is truly inspirational, to say the least.

She is Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and is a published Neuroanatomist. She was able to experience firsthand what it means to only have access to the right hemisphere of her brain. While it has been quite a few years since her ordeal the story she has to offer is one we should all take the time to hear.

She has shared her amazing story on the TED stage and answered the biggest question of all, what is the mystery of life? The state of being in which Bolte Taylor says she experienced is one I cannot fathom. She was given an incredible opportunity through having a stroke.  It seems we are the lucky ones in this, as we get to hear the story of a brain scientist who could articulate the experience that she has gone through.

We are energy-beings connected to one another through the consciousness of our right hemispheres as one human family. And right here, right now, we are brothers and sisters on this planet, here to make the world a better place. And in this moment we are perfect, we are whole and we are beautiful.

While it took Bolte Taylor eight whole years to completely recover from her stroke she is now able to share her story with the world and from her experience we have much to learn. We are separated when it comes to the left hemisphere of our brains the right hemisphere truly is a place of deep inner-peace.

So who are we? We are the life-force power of the universe, with manual dexterity and two cognitive minds. And we have the power to choose, moment by moment, who and how we want to be in the world.

I strongly recommend that you take the time to truly listen to the TED talk below where Bolte Taylor tells her truly inspirational story and really let it sink in. We are destined for so much more in this life. We must really take the measures needed to get where we need to be in life.

Nine dog attack fatalities recorded in 2016 for South Africa; more than the total for the preceeding 9 years "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Man's best friend is more likely to turn on him in South Africa than anywhere else in the world. According to law firm DSC Attorneys, the country has the highest incidence of dog attacks on humans than any other in the world. The firm is advising people on their rights and possible claims stemming from dog attacks. Kirstie Haslam, a partner in the firm, said dog bites account for tens of millions of injuries annually, and in South Africa dogs account for 76 percent to 94 percent of animal bite injuries, and dog bite fatalities are higher because of lack of post-exposure treatment and appropriate access to healthcare. In the US, the figure is three percent to 18 percent and also lower in Australia, Canada and France. Other than it had a fearful shriek, guaranteed to put the fear of God into anyone who heard it, history appears silent about the nature of the bird that aboriginal Australians once named bullin. Yet its shriek portended danger, apparently the approach of the evil spirit Tennateona, but more plausibly an imminent eruption of one of the young volcanoes in the Newer Volcanics Province of southern Australia.

Compared to similar-sized Europe or the continuous US, Australia is remarkably benign volcanically. Volcanism has generally not occurred in Australia since it was first inhabited, perhaps 65,000 years ago, but there are two exceptions. In southern Australia and northern Queensland, volcanic activity likely happened within the past 10,000 years.

More remarkably still, the precise cause(s) of the volcanic activity in these areas remains somewhat elusive. For all that, there is no doubt that volcanic activity occurred here.

Explainer: Marriage Equality Postal Plebiscite High Court Challenge News | Human Rights Law Centre

The Human Rights Law Centre has taken urgent legal action in the High Court on behalf of Australian Marriage Equality and Senator Janet Rice against the Australian Government to stop the marriage equality postal plebiscite.

We want marriage equality

All Australians should have the same opportunities for love, commitment and happiness. All Australians should be able to marry the person they love. We have been working closely with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) community for years to achieve marriage equality.

In 2014, we represented Australian Marriage Equality in a High Court case on ACTs marriage laws, and helped to convince the court to rule that the Australian Parliament has the power to pass laws to achieve marriage equality.

This is how marriage equality can be achieved in Australia with a simple vote right now by our elected Members of Parliament. The majority of the nation backs this straightforward reform. But the Coalition Government refuses to allow this vote to happen without a plebiscite first

We dont need a marriage equality plebiscite

A plebiscite is a vote by the public to decide a particular issue. Legally, we dont need a plebiscite to achieve marriage equality. But the Coalition Government decided that it wants to run a plebiscite on marriage equality. The decision to push for a plebiscite was a tactic by MPs opposed to marriage equality.

Parliament doesnt want a plebiscite

The Government twice asked the Parliament to approve laws to allow the plebiscite to happen. Twice the Parliament rejected these laws in August last year and again in August this year.

So whats the postal plebiscite?

Because Parliament refused to approve laws for a plebiscite, the Government has tried to sidestep Parliament by asking the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to run what the Government has called a postal plebiscite.

Postal plebiscite is unnecessary, divisive and harmful

Gold "IndyWatch Feed World"

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong, looking at the analysis of Socrates on gold we see that the Momentum is bullish, trend is bullish, cycle trend is bullish, but Long term is bearish, how does that square with your call that Gold is going up to $5,000.00 when the long term is bearish.

Thank you.

ANSWER: Looking very long-term is different from the relevant time frame. Gold has not broken out and I have given the number where that becomes a possibility. We are not yet there. Events on the horizon are the critical issue. The world is not ready yet and the stock market also reflects this pending threshold. Socrates comment is thus concerned with the immediate outlook and until gold gets through key points, there is no breakout. The extreme target is not due on this cycle but the next.

Schromen-Wawrin, Wojnowski talk about issues at Port Angeles council candidate forum "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

PORT ANGELES Two candidates vying for a seat on the Port Angeles City Council agreed Tuesday the city should eschew second-class status and encourage economic development and weighed in on an avigation easement for William R. Fairchild Memorial Airport.

Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin and Artur Wojnowski disagreed on how to answer a Nov. 7 advisory vote on fluoridated drinking water, annexation and other issues during a Port Angeles Business Association forum at Joshuas Restaurant.

Schromen-Wawrin and Wojnowski are running in the November general election for Port Angeles City Council Position 3, a four-year nonpartisan position held by Mayor Patrick Downie. Downie is not running for re-election.

Schromen-Wawrin, a Port Angeles native and a lawyer, was a Democratic Party precinct committeeman and recent president of the Clallam County Bar Association.

Wojnowski, a Chicago native who was raised in a Polish household, is maintenance manager for the Dungeness Meadows Home Owners Association.

I dont believe that we should be fluoridating the water, Wojnowski said.

The City Council voted 4-3 last August to stop adding fluoride to the municipal water supply, ending a 10-year-old practice.

Downie, who voted in December 2015 to continue fluoridation, cast the deciding vote last summer.

I believe that we dont know how much [fluoride] we all need to intake, Wojnowski said.

And given the fact that none of us really know how much is required, personally I dont think we should just be blanketing it. But again, thats for everyone to decide on their own.

Schromen-Wawrin said he had a more nuanced view on fluoride, saying the chemical has been shown to improve oral health and that he uses fluoride in his daily dental regime.

Schromen-Wawrin said he would personally vote no on the advisory vote but listen to the will of the voters and act accordingly, provided he has assurances that the city would not put lead and arsenic in the water.

Weve been gridlocked for too long and we need to move on from this issue, Schromen-Wawrin said.

I think at this point this issue has been tossed to the will of the people, which is not necessarily the best way to decide public health matters.

So in that regard, I think Id vote with what the voters said, with my caveat that Im not go...

These are the 7 Types of People You Need to Cut Out of Your Life Immediately! "IndyWatch Feed World"

Toxic people are everywhere, these toxic people have an extremely negative impact on our lives. We need to make sure to identify these toxic people and cut them out of our lives before they sink their teeth into our well-being.

Getting rid of toxic people can and will mean kicking friends out of your life, romantic partners, and in some cases family members. Unfortunately, sometimes it is something that has to be done. If you have ever gotten rid of a toxic person before you know how relieving it is. The following types of people are the most common types of toxic people but some people will fit into more than one of these categories.

I am more than aware that it can be hard to exile people who you care about, but when they are negatively impacting your life and refuse to stop you need to do something. Cutting ties is sometimes the best answer and you should never feel bad for doing so. You have to put yourself first no matter the situation.

7 Types of People You Need to Get Out of Your Life:

1. The Antisocial Personality

This person takes advantage of you and can sometimes become violent. While he or she may care about you to an extent they are not worth the trouble they put you through. These people are what most call sociopaths. If you know anything about sociopaths you know there is no place for them in your life.

2. The Critic

This person judges you all the time. He or she makes you feel as if you are not good enough in all aspects of life and enough is enough!

3. The Arrogant Prick

This person is annoying and intimidating; they are someone you already do your best to avoid. Cutting him or her out of your life only makes sense! People who make you uncomfortable to this extreme extent are not people you need to be around.

4. The Passive Aggressor

This person will always keep you waiting and in some cases make you late to most of your appointments. He or she will never truly allow you to understand what point it is that they are trying to get across, and you will forever be walking on eggshells around them.

5. The Narcissist

While a narcissist can sometimes be an arrogant prick they are usually a bit worse than that. He or she thinks that the world revolves around them, and you dont really mean anything to them anyway. They will look down on you and manipulate you so that they can get...

I Went to a Balinese Trance Ceremony Global Hobo

An unanticipated phone call in the afternoon alerts me that a Daratan ceremony is taking place in a matter of minutes at Pura Dalem Agung, a Hindu temple in the coastal mountains of Seraya Berat. Suddenly, I am beaming; I have been waiting to attend one of these ceremonies for years.

I uncurl from my stupor in the hammock and dash to my bedroom as if I am Beyonc running late for the Met Gala. I plough through the cupboards for my ceremonial get-up, find my udeng (ceremonial hat) and slap it atop my frazzled hair at a crooked angle, throw a sarong around my waist and neglect to put underwear on a favourite new trend of mine. I then dive into the car and haul-ass up a serpentine trail filled with potholes, frightened chickens and topless Balinese women.

I make it just in time.

The banten (offerings) have gone out to the gods; sembahyang (Balinese-Hindu prayers) have just ended; bakso (traditional Balinese soup) has been slurped; the local men have smoked their gudang garum cigarettes. I am the only foreigner present.

It all happens so fast. Drumming erupts and suddenly the Balinese villagers, hundreds of them, are scurrying atop the meadow grass towards the front of the temple a towering structure of carved volcanic rock contorting skyward all cheering and chanting as mankus (Balinese priests) stand atop the cracked cement steps, flicking holy water over the crowd with their bamboo sticks. I follow en masse, pretending I know whats going on. Those of us who receive a douse of the cleansing liquid clamber backwards against the oncoming tide of villagers.

As I back away, an elderly woman catches my gaze. A cheeky grin of knowingness sweeps across her face, and Im mesmerised as she moves into the centre of the field to join the other dancers. The crowd expands around the procession of dancers floating into the centre of the ringed space as the smoke from hundreds of incense sticks swirls into the air. The dancers begin moving their bodies to the riveting sound of 30 men bashing away at drums and gongs as the hubbub stirs through the crowd, leading to an eruption of cheers. The dancers hands twist in the air, their bodies twirl in a dream-like dance and their eyes goggle towards the heavens.

The drumming and cheering amplifies throughout the arena, the temple vibrates with energy, and darkness descends upon the crowd as the horizon flutters in a fiery haze from the dying sunset.

Then the dancing transforms into something else.

Daggers are passed around to some of the dancers, who wave the asymmetrical blades above them in...

Building (Only) Toilets Isnt Always the Answer to Ending Open Defecation "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Ranjeet Kumar Sahani is a PhD student at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Bengaluru.

In a speech in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, We are living in the 21st century. The poor womenfolk of the village wait for the night, until darkness descends, to defecate in the open. Cant we make better arrangements of toilets for the dignity of our mothers and sisters? Two months later, he launched a campaign called Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to end open defecation throughout the country by 2019, together with the construction of 75 million toilets.

It is important to discuss Swachh Bharat Abhiyan now because the deadline of the mission is not very far. Also, the recent trend in terms of open defecation has been not-so-satisfactory for the ambitions of the mission started in 2014. This is because its success rate seems to be very low even though the program is supported by central and state...

010 The Pineal Gland, Higher Self Protection & Geomagnetic Field Correlations w/ Heather Sartain

by: Enlighten Up

We welcome Heather Sartain to our show today who is a professor at the University of Houston, has a degree in Geophysics and Astronomy, is an expert on the pineal gland, and was recently on Cosmic Disclosure with David Wilcock and Corey Goode. She is currently working on 3 books, one which is called The Devolution of the Pineal Gland. She will be sharing with us some information that isn't even published yet so we are excited to have her on the show.

Topics discussed:

What is the pineal gland? What is its purpose? What is the connection to pineal gland calcification and fluoride? Why is fluoride being added to our water supply? Does fluoride really prevent cavities and if so, do we really need it?

How does fluoride effect our spiritual connection? What are the ways we can decalcify our pineal gland? What will happen to us spiritually when we do? What is the relationship between the pineal gland and 'crossing over' to the other side when one passes?

Is there a correlation to the energy field of our pineal glands and the geomagnetic field? What does this mean and do humans have an influence on this? Do we as humans possess a much stronger power than we're lead to believe?

Plus a bonus introduction to E.Ts! Heather's father worked for NASA and Lockheed Martin as an aerospace engineer before passing away in 2013. Before he did he shared with her some interesting information about UFO's and their technology found in the infamous Roswell crash as well as others. Does some of our communication technology actually come from recovered and reverse engineered UFO technology found?

HI ALL

MANY CHANGES AFOOT. WE ALREADY KNOW THE RV IS IN FULL SWING, AND THIS WEEK HAS BEEN HUGE FOR CLOSINGS. WE KNOW THAT BIG FILES HAVE BEEN DISPOSED OF, AND THEY ARE GEARING UP THE SPEED THAT THESE THINGS ARE BEING DONE.

I HAVE TALKED WITH A COUPLE OF LAWYERS DIRECTLY INVOLVED AND THEY HAVE STATED THAT THEY HAVE CLOSED AND PEOPLE PAID. WE DID NOT HEAR MUCH ON THE OTHER END, SO I ATTRIBUTE THAT THAT TO STRICT NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS.

SO TO ANSWER A FEW OF YOU, YES IT IS ALL COMING TRUE. THERE WILL BE FUNDS ON A LARGE SCALE COMING OUT TO YOU AND THE ECONOMIES.

THIS IS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE RELEASES. WHAT OTHER WAY CAN YOU GET TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OUT INTO THE ECONOMIES SAFELY IN A MEASURED WAY SO AS NOT TO CREATE CHAOS AND RUIN PEOPLE.

NOW THAT IS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN AS THE LOTTERY MENTALITY WILL BE VERY STRONG IN MANY PEOPLE. YOU GET A FEW MILLION, AND GO NUTS, AND A YEAR LATER YOU ARE IN WORSE SHAPE THAN WHEN YOU STARTED.

I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAR THINKING AS OPPOSED TO MUDDY THINKING. BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU RECEIVE LARGE MONEY. DO NOT LET YOUR ELATION GOVERN YOUR PRACTICALITY. DO WISE THINGS. ONLY THIS WAY WILL YOU BE OF USE TO YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY, AND THE PROJECT YOU HAVE UNDERTAKEN TO DO TO HELP OTHERS AS WELL AS YOURSELF FOR THE LONG TERM.

ON OUR SIDE, WE ARE ALMOST THERE. WE WERE TO GET OUR FIRST FUNDS YESTERDAY (YES I CAN TALK A LITTLE NOW). HOWEVER, THE TYPHOON HATO IN HONG KONG CLOSED THE BANKS AND DELAYED USAGAIN. AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. THAT ONE WAS A FORCE 10 WITH MAX WINDS AT 223 KPH. IT CAUSED OVER 8 BILLION IN DAMAGE IN HONG KONG (PRELIMINARY TALLY).

WE WERE ALL COUNTING ON THESE FIRST FUNDS TO GIVE US RELIEF UNTIL THE MAJOR PROJECT FUNDS HIT, BUT AGAIN THE FORCES OUT THERE DECIDED WE HAVE TO GRIT OUR TEETH A LITTLE BIT MORE. IT IS SOO DIFFICULT TRYING TO MAINTAIN STABILITY AND KEEP EVERYBODY ON THE TEAM FED AND UNDER A ROOF. FEW PEOPLE HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD THAT IS.

WE HAVE ALSO RECEIVED EMAILS FOR GIVING HELP RATHER THAN RECEIVING IT, AND YES WE WILL HELP SHORTLY. I HAVE ANSWERED A FEW OF THESE AND REST ASSURED THAT THE MOMENT WE HAVE ANYTHING, WE WILL SHARE. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE GEARED FOR AND THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

THE RUMORS OF OUR DEMISE ARE KINDA WRONGWE ARE NOT GOING AWAY THERE IS TOO MUCH WORK TO DO. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR SUPPORT FOR WHAT WE DO.

As vast areas in India are again submerged by floods, the priority at present is to intensify the rescue and relief effort. However, sooner rather than later, we also have to confront and attempt to answer uncomfortable questions regarding why the vast investments towards flood-control efforts have not yet yielded any significant results. Expenditure incurred in various plan periods on floods adds up to around Rs 1,50,000 crore at 2010-11 prices. Over 35,000 kms of embankments have been built. However, the area classified as flood-prone has increased from around 40,000 million hectares in 1980 to around 50,000 million hectares at presen...

US and S. Korea Launch War Drills against DPRK
The US imperialists and the south Korean war maniacs on August 21 launched Ulji Freedom Guardian joint military drills aimed at making a preemptive attack on the DPRK, according to CBS of south Korea.

Despite the repeated warnings served by the DPRK, they kicked off the war rehearsal under the pretext of resolutely "countering" the "provocation by the north." This is aimed at igniting a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula at any cost.

What is more serious is the fact that brass hats of the US military including the commander of the US forces in Pacific and the commander of the Strategic Forces visited south Korea on the eve of the rehearsal, the number of the GIs involved in the drill far outnumber the one in the last year and even mercenaries from seven vassal countries including Australia and the UK have joined them.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has plunged into a critical phase due to the reckless north-targeted war racket of the war maniacs.

Pan-African News Wire "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

In Quest of the New
The Sungni Senior Middle School in Rangnang District is known across Pyongyang as one whose students are bright at their lessons. When I visited the school to know its secret, headmaster Kim Sok Ryol, Labour Hero and Peoples Teacher, was examining the contents of the teaching program of physics. He showed the program to me. The teaching program of last year was filled up closely with new notes leaving no blank, whereas the new teaching program was clean, edited from last years program. Its fuzzy pages are eloquent of the painstaking efforts of teachers to find out a new teaching method, writing in notes about the questions brought up in class.

Here is a note jotted down by a teacher in the space of his program of instruction:

The lesson went on by questions and answers and the students who answered my questions gratified me. But when I posed a problem relevant to the subject of the lesson, many of them failed to solve it. This was because I did not take into consideration their difference in ability. So, poor students feeling small in the presence of bright students remain dumb in class. I think it is required by the present-day education to enhance the average capacity of the students to nurse them into a large force of talent.

To give the different-levelled students enough time for thinking, the teacher cut the time of explanation in the lessons on condition that they prepare enough for the lessons, while letting them settle simple problems by means of discussion among each study group. Then he made it a rule to conduct a lesson where detailed explanation is given only about a difficult problem when it came hard for all students to understand and rewrote the teaching program accordingly. This enabled the weak students to have more opportunity to have their say and give full play to their latent faculties and encouraged all students to devote themselves to studies with greater zeal. His experience was generalized in the school, bringing forth various new teaching methods, and this resulted in a new school-years teaching program for every subject which was just like an essay.

While making much account of the teachers fluent speech in conducting classwork by the heuristic method, the school jud......

Yoda bat happy to be recognized as new species "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The character Yoda, the venerable Jedi Master from the Star Wars franchise, may have come from a galaxy far, far away, but his face seems to pop up a lot here on Earth. Earlier this year, two new species of tarsier were described by scientists. Tarsiers look so much like Yoda that they inspired an unconfirmed rumor that the character was based on the small but surprisingly capable creatures from the island nations of Southeast Asia. A new fruit bat species found in the rainforests of Papua New Guinea and described in the Records of the Australian Museum this month also resembles Yoda closely enough that it has actually been referred to simply as the Yoda bat at least until now. Since most remote Papuans have never seen Star Wars, I thought it fitting to use a local name: the Hamamas meaning happy tube-nosed fruit bat, Nancy Irwin, an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Biology at the University of York in the UK and author of the study describing the species, said in a statement. Irwin explains why the happy moniker seemed an appropriate choice: The species is very difficult to tell apart from other tube-nosed bat species. Bat species often look similar to each other, but differ significantly in behaviour, feeding and history. Most of the morphological characteristics that separate this bat from other species are associated with a broader, rounder jaw which gives the appearance of a constant smile. Stealthing, by any other name Overland literary journal

While the term stealthing may not be preferential, it isnt the first time that movements have had to reclaim terminology in order to initiate their own conversations. From the feminist pop culture magazine titled Bitch, to The Vagina Monologues acrostic classic Reclaiming Cunt, to the now common usage of the term queer in the LGBTQI community as Paul Baker, a professor of English Language at Lancaster University in the UK says, control language and you control the society.

Cape Cod Shark Cull Lunacy "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

I am livid after reading the County Commissioner of Barnstables stupid shark cull proposal for Cape Cod. He has proposed what he calls a localized shark hazard mitigation strategy that would involve luring and killing sharks that lurk too close to the Capes popular swimming beaches. Tagging the sharks and studying them is all well and good, Ronald Beaty said by phone. But when the day comes an innocent child is eaten or maimed for life by the time somebody is killed by a shark here, its too late.

South Australia's Shark Cull has been widely ridiculed by Scientisits

South Australias Shark Cull has been widely ridiculed by Scientisits

Beatys language just wreaks of jaundiced PR spin. Terms like Innocent child maimed for life pulls at our heart strings. Then for sharks he portrays them as evil with terms like lurking too close to shore, as though the sharks shouldnt even be there. The trouble is this is just persuasive language that totally ignores the facts.

For example, since 1937 not a single person has been killed by shark attack in Massachusetts, yet over 20,000 people have died by murder or car accident. Each year in Massachusetts alone, around 26 people drown for goodness sake. And 10 people die by falling out of bed. If Beaty, a convicted felon I might add, is so worried about the lives of his constituents, perhaps he should be legislating on bed heights, guns, beach swimming and road safety, rather than going after the poor old sharks that have been falsely maligned ever since Jaws came out.

Beaty made a few other crazy statements as well. His proposal, he claimed, is modeled after the successful baited drum line techniques used in South Africa and Australia. This is more bullshit. The program in South Australia was a dismal failure, and has now been abandoned after their EPA ruled it never made the beaches any safer, while killing a large number of non-target animals.

And dont get me started on South Africas cull, which has been ridiculed by Scientists for decades. I witnessed it first hand last year and it is a disgrace They parade dead sharks in front of school groups and tourists, trying to justify their cull, but in reality the program has simply evolved into a cushy employment program that exploits animals, and benefits corrupt officials. There is no scientific evidence supporting the cull in South Africa or Australia, nor in Cape Cod.

Suong Nguyen was scared of woman in niqab before racist attack, court told you said it

August 14 2017 5:53PM
Stephanie Gardiner

Suong Nguyen was scared of a woman wearing a niqab when she banged on her car door, told her to take off her mask, and called her a terrorist.

The victim, Semaa Abdulwali, filmed the racist attack in the car park at Macquarie University on January 20, and the footage was watched by millions of people when her husband Ramzy Alamudi posted it online.

Nguyen was on Monday handed good behaviour bonds and a fine, after pleading guilty to intimidation and causing damage.

Magistrate Suzanne Seagrave said Nguyen displayed an unexplainable prejudice that has no place whatsoever in our multicultural society.

FixedIt: Child abuse is not a sex scandal Jane Gilmore

The Mercurys front page yesterday called one of Tasmanias worst cases of child sexual abuse a sex scandal. Why? Because a powerful white man (former state MP Terry Martin) was found guilty of raping the 12 year old and taking pornographic images of her.

As a 12 year old girl and ward of the state, she was sold to up to 200 men by her mother and stepfather.

Only one man was charged with the rape and abuse of this child because police either could not identify the rapists or could not prove beyond reasonable doubt that the men who paid money to rape her couldnt tell the difference between a 12 year old and an adult woman.

This is not a sex scandal. It was a monumental failure of state care in looking after a vulnerable child. It was grotesque abuse of a helpless girl by her mother and step father. It was revolting choices by the men who raped her to pay money to rape and abuse a 12 year old girl.

The victim in this case is not a disgraced former MP, its the child who was abused so terribly.

The men who colluded with her step father and mother to abuse her were not committing sex acts they were committing rape and sexual abuse of a child.

And describing it as renting the girl is obscene. She was not an apartment or a car, she was a person and a child who had no ability to consent to what was done to her and no one to help her make it stop.

Popeye on The Malliard Report (08-15-2017) "GroovUs Feed Npodcasts"

(POPEYE) Conspiracy an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot. A word that has become quite a regular staple to the vocabulary of listeners of The Malliard report, and this weeks guest is certainly no stranger to this rule. Awakened, red-pilled, truther, or whatever moniker you want to give this weeks guest, one thing for sure is that he is no stranger to venturing down the rabbit hole. On this episode Jim welcomes the one that helped push him into the realm of the shadowy cabal, and that is none other than Popeye of Down the Rabbit Hole Radio and Federaljack.com. Popeye joins up with the report to discuss geo-engineering, 9/11/, the right/left paradigm, unrest in the US, the bastardization of the word conspiracy and much more. So go ahead and press play, and take a step through the looking glass and venture down that hole

Just try and scroll through a news website, or turn on a channel without seeing something about the mass unrest that is transpiring not only in the south eastern states, but across the nation. Alt-Right, ANTIFA, Neo-Nazis, Far Left, social justice, (insert group here) lives matter, us-vs-them. As it was once stated: In times of trouble, everyone joins a team. No one waves a flag for all human beings. No ones excited unless they are divided. Someones going to have to give in While the perceived chaos seems to be spreading at an exponential rate, one cant help but to stop and ponder at the possibility of this being a contrived epidemic.

When the idea of induced civil unrest is brought up, the first notion is to question why such a thing would even happen in the first place. While a simple answer may appear difficult to convey at first, four little words may be able to explain everything: order out of chaos. It is far simpler to gain control of a situation or a people when things are completely out of order. The authoritative figure almost appears as a savior of sorts. By turning people against each other in an asymmetrical warfare fashion, this allows the powers...

UK backpackers warned of Aust exploitation National News Echonetdaily

Mia Ayliffe-Chung

Mia Ayliffe-Chung

On the anniversary of the death of a young English tourist in Queensland, British backpackers have been told to contact their government if their working conditions in Australia are unsafe.

The advice, posted online by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Wednesday, warns tourists heading to Australia on working-holiday visas that while most enjoy their holiday, occasionally issues can arise.

In the first year of their trips, backpackers can choose to do 88 days of regional work, usually agricultural, so they can get a visa to stay in Australia for a second year.

But there have been reports of travellers being underpaid, or not at all, lured to places without work, having their passports taken and having to work in unsafe conditions.

The foreign office says young Britons can contact the UKs National Crime Agency office in Canberra directly on a special email to report any illegal behaviour by an employer or accommodation owner.

The advice comes a year after the death of British backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung who was killed in a frenzied knife attack which also left fellow Briton Tom Jackson dead at a north Queensland hostel.

French national Smail Ayad has been accused of their murders.

He is being held in a mental health facility.

Since her death, Ms Chungs mother Rosie Ayliffe has campaigned to expose what she says is rife exploitation of young travellers in Australia.

In a blog post marking the anniversary of her daughters death, Ms Ayliffe claims her daughter was working in unsafe conditions at the hostel Home Hill, which she calls a Hell Hole.

The UKs Foreign Office said travellers must do their due diligence before going to stay with a stranger in a remote area, let family know where they were going, and remember phone and internet signals are not always available in remote parts of the country.

It also reminded travellers of their workers rights and that the Fair Work Ombudsman can provide them with advice on their rights.

Tourists who may have been exploited and are actively helping an investigation will not lose their visas.

US Navy removes admiral after collisions "IndyWatch Feed World"

Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin. (Wikipedia)

Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin. (Wikipedia)

The US Navy has relieved Seventh Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin of his duties after two fatal collisions involving warships in Asia in less than three months.

Admiral Scott Swift, the commander of the US Pacific Fleet, relieved Aucoin from duty at the US Navys Yokosuka naval base in Japan, a US Navy spokesman said.

Rear Admiral Phil Sawyer, the deputy commander of the Pacific Fleet, will assume command immediately, he added.

A pre-dawn collision between a guided-missile destroyer and a merchant vessel east of Singapore and Malaysia on Monday was the fourth major incident in the US Pacific Fleet this year .

The decision to relieve Aucoin was made due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command, the spokesman said.

Aucoin was due to step down next month.

An international search-and-rescue operation involving aircraft, divers and vessels from the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia is looking for the 10 US sailors missing since Mondays accident.

On Tuesday, US Navy and Marine Divers found human remains inside sealed sections of the damaged hull of the USS John S McCain, which is moored at Singapores Changi Naval Base.

The Navy has not yet announced the identities of the bodies discovered.

The US Navy is also working to identify a body found by the Malaysian navy about eight nautical miles northwest of the collision site.

The latest collision has already prompted a fleet-wide investigation and plans for temporary halts in US Navy operations.

The USS John S. McCains sister ship, the USS Fitzgerald, almost sank off the coast of Japan after colliding with a Philippine container ship on June 17.

The bodies of seven US sailors were found in a flooded berthing area after that collision.

The USS John S. McCain and the tanker Alnic MC collided on Monday while the US ship was approaching Singapore on a routine port call.

The impact tore a hole in the warships port side at the waterline, flooding compartments that included a crew sleeping area.

SBC: Mulgrave By-Election Hustings "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

SBC: Mulgrave By-Election Hustings

  • a brief  In My View report by NIGEL WARD.

~~~~~
This evening, Wednesday 23rd August 2017, I attended a hustings for the by-election to be held on Tuesday 29th August 2017 for the Mulgrave ward of Scarborough Borough Council .
The turn-out, as far as members of the public were concerned, was good, with all seats occupied I would estimate around 30-40 people.
Before the hustings began, I learned from the general conversation that two of the four candidates had tendered their apologies and would not be attending the Conservative candidate Marion WATSON apparently had a more pressing appointment, and the Independent octogenaraian candidate John ARMSBY (a former member; he lost this seat in 2015), who had apparently indicated that his electors knew perfectly well who he was; he needed no further introduction, thank you.
A third candidate was also absent. Lee Francis DERRICK for the Yorkshire Party, had apparently not responded to his invitation.
This latter, in particular, came as no surprise to me. I had written to the Yorkshire Party on 1st August 2017 requesting a little background and a picture of the candidate. No response. I must take that as an indication of the kind of representation Mr DERRICK would offer his electors were there even a hope in hell of him being elected.
This left Hugo FEARNLEY [Labour], the sole attending candidate, to accept the Chairs suggestion that the session could best be salvaged by an open Question & Answer session.
Hugo FEARNLEY introduced himself with a brief resum of his life in the environs of Whitby. He explained the special significance of this particular by-election, that it provides an opportunity to negate the present Tory majority at SBC.
The Question side of the dialogue was hogged by two ladies of a certain age who, whilst professing to be apolitical and impartial, used the opportunity to bombard Mr FEARNLEY with increasingly hostile questions, some ranging far beyond the remit of whichever candidate achieves election to a seat on a Borough Council. That, and singing the praises of paedo-apologist Councillor John NOCK [Con.], who, with his c...
High Court kicks off MP citizenship cases National News Echonetdaily
The High Court will give a clearer picture on how long it will take to consider the futures of five MPs when it holds a directions hearing in Brisbane.
It is also expected former independent MP Tony Windsor will seek to make submissions on Thursday in the case of his former rival, Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says hes very confident the court will find in favour of MPs such as Mr Joyce, who recently discovered they are dual citizens by descent.
Attorney-General George Brandis has recommended to the court a hearing by the full court be held on September 13 and 14.
He said in a submission to the court there is a compelling public interest to determine the cases as soon as possible.
Under section 44 of the constitution a person is incapable of being elected to the parliament if they are a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power.
Mr Joyce, the deputy prime minister, has been found to have been a New Zealand citizen by descent but the government has advice this isnt enough to unseat him.
If the court finds him to be ineligible, it will trigger a by-election in his NSW seat of New England, and potentially put at risk the governments one-seat majority in the lower house.
The court will also examine stood-aside cabinet minister Matt Canavan, whose mother over a decade ago signed him up to be an Italian resident abroad.
In the cases of One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts and former Greens senators Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam, they were born overseas.
If any of the senators are disqualified from parliament their seat will go to the next person on their parties respective Senate tickets from the 2016 federal election.
Two other senators, Fiona Nash and Nick Xenophon, will soon also be referred by parliament to the court over their UK citizenship by descent.
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson defended the fact that taxpayers were funding the cases.
Its a shame it has got to this and its being challenged, she said, when asked about Senator Roberts situation.
Students at a regional high school have been taught the wrong maths. (file pic)
Senior students at a regional NSW high school are preparing for their HSC exams after being taught the wrong maths course for several months.
The states education minister is furious at the bungle and has launched an investigation, while parents want staff to be disciplined.
Five year 11 and two year 12 students at Coonamble High School were taught Maths General 1 instead of Maths General 2, a spokesman for the education department told AAP in a statement on Wednesday.
Maths General 2 counts towards a students ATAR, which allows them to enter university, while Maths General 1 does not.
Students and their parents have met with a department representative and were subsequently advised to do their best in upcoming exams with the help of additional tutors.
Its bad timing and the scary thing is it could have been worse, P&C president and parent of one affected year 11 student, Lee OConnor, told AAP.
NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes said the proposed solution was not acceptable.Im angry on their behalf if this was my child I would be furious, he told 2GB on Wednesday.
What the school has come up with, in my view, is not acceptable.
Mr Stokes has instructed a representative of the NSW Education Standards Authority to find a solution and investigate the event.
Shaun Davidson is still on the run.
Bali escapee Shaun Davidson insists hes safe from authorities as an international manhunt continues for the West Australian.
Davidson, or someone purporting to be him, has again taken to social media to taunt police and suggest he could have fled as far afield as the Caribbean.
His most recent Facebook posts show him checking in at Cafe Luna in Oistins, Barbados on Wednesday AEST saying dinner time Im starving.
A separate post about an afternoon training session was from the citys First Fitness Gym.
Bali police on Tuesday said they were focusing their search for Davidson along the border between Indonesia and East Timor.
Theyre searching a few 1000 ks I think I safe, he told his 4800 Facebook friends.
But some of Davidsons Facebook followers have pointed out how easy it is to appear to be anywhere in the world simply by updating Facebook status settings and using location changer apps.
In a message sent to News Corp via Facebook, Davidson said he would have been shot if he had been caught on the run in Indonesia, and that he had no faith in the Australian justice system.
Them still thinking Im in Indonesia is the best thing for me so they can keep looking and thinking Im there, Ill only be shot if I get caught inside Indonesia by Indonesian police and resist arrest none of those things will happen, Im not Indonesia so thier (sic) police cant and when and if ever Interpol come knocking Im not gonna resist Ive never resisted arrest, he said.
I just want to live the rest of my life happily Ive retired and arnt doing anything that affects anyone else badly Im living a normal life in a new place and am happy doing so.
Davidson said he wasnt bothered if people believed his social media posts or not.
Ppl believe it its very entertaining that I can post my locations for real and everyone believes its not real including police haha, he said.
People who think punitive measures help drug addicts havent seen what I have The Pen
The following article was written by Alex Wodak, who is president of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation and perhaps Australias leading expert and advocate for a different approach to dealing with harm full drug use issues. It was published in the Australian edition of the Guardian (22 August 2017). This is worthwhile reading and the points he raises deserve serious consideration, in any attempt to find answers to what is a complex problem that must ultimately be seen as a health issue. Wodak points out that penalysing the user has brought harm to those targeted and failed to reduce harmful drug use.
Drug testing trials for people on income support have been trialled and abandoned in a few countries. In addition to causing significant harm to affected people and the wider community, they came at an enormous cost to the taxpayer.
In 1986 I was part of a group that resorted to civil disobedience to get needle syringe programs started in Australia. HIV had begun spreading among people who injected drugs in Sydney with a real concern of a major national epidemic. But the NSW government refused to allow even a pilot program. From our office near Sydneys Kings Cross, we handed out clean needles. Breaking the law and helping to halt an epidemic was better than waiting till the government agreed and risking a nasty epidemic in the meantime.
Fast forward 30 years and I had hoped Australia would have adopted a more compassionate, evidence-based approach to drugs where illicit drugs were seen as mainly a health and social problem rather than just a criminal justice issue. And where governments stood up to the drinks industry. But things arent looking good with the government today announcing the first trial site for a new drug testing regime for welfare recipients.
In the May 2017 budget, the Turnbull government handed down a number of changes to our income support system. People with alcohol and drug problems were directly targeted. Plans included stripping people off their disability pensions, removing certain protections for people with alcohol and drug problems, and perhaps most controversially instituting a drug testing trial for new income support recipients.
The objective of these policies is as clear as mud. Malcolm Turnbull claimed it will help people get the treatment they need, saying its a policy based on love. The social services minister,...
Watch: Veteran owns police chief and mayor after cops killed unarmed man "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"
After citizens took over a city hall meeting to hold police accountable for a recent killing and subsequent beating, a veteran epitomized the situation perfectly
Euclid, OH Tensions among police and citizens in Euclid, Ohio have come to a head recently after police killed an unarmed 23-year-old man for unknown reasons and officers were seen on video pulverizing another man over a suspended license. A video uploaded to Facebook captured an articulate rant by a military veteran about these recent events, directed at the police chief and mayor, which epitomized these tensions perfectly.
In March of this year, a Euclid police officer, responding to a call about a man sitting in his vehicle, shot and killed 23-year-old Luke Stewart. The police department and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation have yet to give any reason for the shooting, and an investigation would later reveal Stewart was unarmed. Naturally, the citizens of Euclid are upset and want answers.
The family and citizens demanding answers as to why these recent events unfolded like they did came to a head this week as dozens of people took over a Euclid City Council meeting.
As FOX 8 reports:
The protesters are also calling for a comprehensive investigation into the policies, practices and tactics of Euclid Police.
They point to a recent traffic stop captured on video that shows a Euclid patrolman using his closed fists to strike 25-year-old Richard Hubbard numerous times in the face and head.
Officer Michael Amiott contends that Hubbard was resisting arrest. Amiott, who resigned from the Mentor Police Department in 2014 after his superiors accused him of being dishonest about a traffic stop, has been placed on paid administrative leave.
On Monday night, protesters confronted Euclid city officials about what they perceive as a disparity in justice. A member of Black Lives Matter said, Your officers are backing each other after they hit black people, not just hit, beat.
During the meeting, Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer announced the suspension of the officer who beat Hubbard, noting that he will be suspended for 15 days without pay the maximum number of days he could give officer Michael Amiott due to department rules.
After the announcement, one of the people attending the meeting, Damien Parker, confronted the police chief and the mayor to address the serious problem of corruption and brutality within their department. His well-word...
Commbank faces money laundering class action The Pen
Contributed by Jim Hayes
In the wake of the recent money laundering scandal, where Commbank has been caught allowing its payment machines to channel proceeds from illegal activities to other accounts, Australias biggest bank faces what could prove to be the largest scale class action in Australian history.
Commbank is to be taken to court by legal firm Maurice Blackburn, on behalf of a large number of shareholders. The case is expected to cost the bank more than $100 million.
The proposed action will allege CBA breached its obligations by failing to inform the market about the money-laundering allegations when they were first made in 2015.
The CBA [Commbank] admitted in an ASX announcement on 9 August of this year that it was aware of its failures in relation to the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing legislation in the second half of 2015, Maurice Blackburn national head of class actions Andrew Watson told a news conference on Wednesday.
But at that stage, it made no announcement to shareholders of its awareness of those breaches. In fact, on the contrary, it said nothing for nearly two years, Andrew Watson said.
Worse, on its website and in repeated statements to the market, it asserted its compliance with that legislation. The truth is it was not in compliance.
There are more than 800,000 small shareholders, who have suffered a significant share price drop, in the wake of the launching of procedures in the Federal Court by AUSTRAC. They fell by 3.9 percent in one day. If multi-billion dollar penalties are incurred, share prices will fall further.
Public anger against the Commbank is rising and is likely to cause a considerable loss of business. Its recent announcement of a record full year profit of $9.8 billion has not helped. Alleged illegal activities, other questionable practices and record profit together and it spells out what looks like out of control greed and the pressure is on the government to do something to bring this and the other major banks to account.
Newstart is not enough for basic needs The Pen
Contributed from Western Australia
David Ciady reported on the ABCs PM radio that Australians on Newstart, Centrelinks unemployment benefit,researchers at the University of New South Wales say that current payments are not enough to meet basic necessities,
The key points they found are:
  • Payments fall short of basic standard of living cost by $47 to $126 per week.
  • They suggest introducing minimum wage-style mechanism for Newstart allowance
  • Newstart hasnt been increased in over two decades in real terms.
Researchers at the university have calculated weekly budgets for a range of living situations, working out the minimum required to ensure both material and social needs are met.
Among their findings, are that the welfare payment for a single, unemployed person as stated on Centrelinks  Welfare table, needs to increase by $96 a week to $433, while an unemployed couple with no children should be provided $107 more than they do currently, just to get them up to the poverty line.
Peter Saunders, who led the research, said the findings suggest a change is needed in how Newstart payments are determined independent of government.
We should be looking at whether or not its time to introduce a mechanism, a bit like the minimum wage process, for Newstart allowance and possibly for other social benefits, Professor Saunders said.
These are very tight budgets to achieve what we call a healthy standard of living, so that all the family members are healthy in terms of what they eat, they do, [and whether they] exercise.
Newstart recipient Johnny Windus, from the Perth suburb of Kemscott, has been out of work for two years and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
I basically receive a Newstart allowance, which is $580 a fortnight. Nothing in life is free so you do your necessities in a budget, but its all the extras that come into it that drive you under every week, he said.
You end up having to forfeit food, or putting your electricity bill off for another fortnight and it just goes on and on.
Mr Windus said he needs to pay between $30 and $50 a month for internet access to aid his job search, and his phone service drops in and out according to what he can afford.
Everythings going backwards, so I cant see any way out of it basically, unless some bloke walks up to me [with a job], Mr Windus said.
Advocacy groups are calling on the Government to use the so-called budget standard measurements to set welfare payments in the future.
Cassandra Goldie, from the Australian Council of Social Service, said the research confirmed the Newstart allowance was grossly inadequate.
Thoughts For The Week.
Battle for the Mind.
In his essay Politics and the English Language, George Orwell observes that political language serves to distort and obscure reality. Orwells description of political speech in 1940 was prophecy he used the words doublespeak, Newspeak and doublethink words that define our 21st century political information.
Orwell said political language can be designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
The current issues we are confronted with every day are filled with doublethink and doublespeak we have to investigate, sift, and research in our quest for reality.
What is really important to the social engineers that form our New World of doublespeak is the ability to lie, whether knowingly or unconsciously, and to get away with it; and the ability to use lies and choose and shape facts selectively, blocking out those that dont fit with their agenda or program.
The purpose of propaganda is to narrow and limit human consciousness, confuse human conscience, and control and narrow the range of thinking. As all students of Orwellian literature will recall, Squealer, the propagandist porker in Animal Farm, can turn black into white and is expert in new belief.
Examples of the structural nature of the use of doublespeak have been made by modern scholars. Noam Chomsky argues in Manufacturing Consent, The Political Economy of the Mass Media that people in modern society consist of decision-makers and social participants who have to be made to agree. According to Chomsky, the media and public relations industry actively shape public opinion, working to present messages in line with their economic agenda for the purposes of controlling of the public mind.
When the state loses the bludgeon, when you cant control people by force and when the voice of the people can be heard, you have to control what people think. And the standard way to do this is to resort to what in more honest days used to be called propaganda. designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
The current diversion...
FLASHBACK: Is Putin rebuilding Russia according to Solzhenitsyn's design? "IndyWatch Feed World"
During an informal question-and-answer session at the pro-Kremlin Seliger youth camp on August 29, a young woman expressed concern about the "growth of nationalism" in Kazakhstan. The woman wondered if a "Ukraine scenario" was possible there if longtime Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev left office -- and asked what the Kremlin's strategy was for dealing with this eventuality. "What are the chances of Eurasian integration?" she asked. Putin stressed Kazakhstan's importance as an ally and lavishly praised Nazarbaev as a wise leader dedicated to the welfare of his country.
